Rip and Convert DVDs for the iPad with Handbrake – Recommended Settings

In a DPReview post, “noirdesir” provided a great set of screen captures that shows how to get video from your computer to your iPad using Handbrake and iTunes.

This was in response to “Hasselblad100″‘s query on how to rip and convert DVD movie content so that it will play on the iPad. “noirdesir” skips the ripping process and assumes that the starting point is an existing video file already on your computer.

I’ll link up to the screenshots below with captions and commentary. Please note that these images belong to “noirdesir”.

Step 1 – Select “Normal” profile in Handbrake (see the original in a new window).

Step 4 – Picture settings (accessed via the Picture Settings icon on the toolbar) in Handbrake (see the original in a new window).

Step 5 – Verify the information in the Get Info window for the generated MPEG-4 (m4v) video file.

Step 6 – Drag the MPEG-4 (m4v) file into the iTunes Library section.

Step 7 – In iTunes, verify information in the Summary tab for the imported video file.

Step 8 – After syncing the iPad with your computer, verify that the video file appears in the Movies section for the iPad.
